Overview

What plumbing really costs, and why

Most plumbing repairs cost $125 to $350, which covers a toilet, faucet or sink fix. Burst pipes run $400 to $2,000, slab leaks $500 to $3,500 and a new toilet $350 to $800 installed. Plumbers charge $45 to $150 per hour or bill a flat $200 to $250 for a standard repair, with a $50 to $200 service call fee on top.

The same job quotes very differently because access drives the price. A leaking faucet in an open cabinet is quick, while a leak inside a wall or under a slab means cutting, testing and patching. Emergency and weekend work bills at $125 to $170 per hour, roughly double or triple the weekday rate, so when the work can be scheduled matters.

Installed price for small repairs at $125 to $350 each, the same rate as our small repair row. Bundling several fixes into one visit saves the $50 to $200 service fee every time a plumber has to start the truck.

What affects the cost of a plumbing repair

Six things move a plumbing bill more than anything else. Ask the plumber to quote the same access and finish work, so the bids describe the same repair.

01

Access and where the leak is

An accessible fixture takes minutes. A leak inside a wall, under a slab or above a ceiling needs cutting, testing and patching, and a ceiling leak repair runs $700 to $3,000.

02

Hourly rate versus flat rate

Plumbers charge $45 to $150 per hour, and master plumbers $100 to $200 per hour. Flat rates are $200 to $250 for small repairs and $500 to $800 for large ones, which protects you when a job runs long.

03

Service call and trip fees

Expect a $50 to $200 service call minimum, and $1 to $2 per mile after the first 10 miles in rural areas. The fee usually covers the first hour, so bundling repairs in one visit is cheaper.

04

Emergency and after-hours work

Weekend, holiday and overnight calls bill at $125 to $170 per hour, about double or triple the daytime rate. Waiting for a weekday appointment is the single biggest saver on a small leak.

05

Parts, fixtures and permits

A new toilet is $100 to $500 for the unit and $250 to $750 installed. Plumbing permits cost $30 to $500 and are needed when walls open or new pipe is run.

06

Pipe material and house age

Copper, PEX, galvanized steel and PVC each need different fittings and skills. Old galvanized pipe often breaks during a repair, which turns a small fix into a repipe.

Labor vs materials: where the money goes

A plumbing bill is mostly labor plus a service fee, with parts usually a small share. Plumbers bill $45 to $150 per hour, add a $50 to $200 service call, and price big jobs flat: $500 to $800 for large repairs, $400 to $2,000 for a burst pipe.

DIY or hire a pro?

Swapping a faucet, replacing a flapper or snaking a slow sink drain are manageable DIY jobs, and a faucet install runs $120 to $300 if you hire it out. Shut the water off first, use thread sealant where it belongs, and know when to stop. A stripped fitting behind a finished wall is where DIY gets expensive.

Repipes, slab leaks, gas lines and anything inside a wall or under the floor belong to a licensed plumber. Most states require a license for work that changes the plumbing system, and a permit costs $30 to $500 when walls open. Water damage from one bad joint costs more than the labor you saved.

Common plumbing jobs and prices

What the most requested repairs cost, from HomeGuide's plumbing labor and slab leak tables. The price line moves with access, not with the part, which is why two similar leaks quote $150 apart.

Plumber vs handyman vs DIY

All three can fix a dripping faucet. The right choice depends on whether the work touches the plumbing system, needs a permit or could flood a room if it fails.

A handyman is fine for a faucet swap, and DIY is fine for a flapper. Anything that opens a wall, touches gas or moves the main line needs a licensed plumber who can pull a permit. How a plumbing repair is done

A repair follows a fixed order, and each step should appear on the invoice. If a bid leaves out patching or cleanup, that is where the extra charge appears later.

1

Diagnose the problem

The plumber reproduces the issue, checks pressure and looks for the source. The service fee of $50 to $200 usually covers this first visit.

2

Shut off water and drain the line

Water goes off at the fixture valve or the main, and the line is drained so the repair area stays dry.

3

Locate the leak or blockage

Listening equipment, moisture meters or a camera find hidden leaks. Slab leaks often need electronic detection before any concrete opens.

4

Open access

Drywall, cabinet backs or slab may have to be opened to reach the pipe. Patching and disposal are separate line items on many bids.

5

Make the repair or replace the section

The damaged pipe is cut out and replaced, a fitting is tightened, or a drain is cleared with a snake or jetter.

6

Test under pressure

Water goes back on slowly and every joint is checked under pressure. A second failure in old galvanized pipe shows up at this step.

7

Patch, clean and hand over

The access hole is patched and debris is hauled away, and you get an invoice with parts and labor itemized.

What to ask before you hire

?
Is this a flat rate or hourly, and what does the service fee cover?
?
Is the price for diagnosis only, or diagnosis plus the repair?
?
Will you pull a permit if a wall or the main line is opened?
?
Are you licensed and insured in my state, and what is your license number?
?
Is patching, cleanup and hauling included in the quote?
?
What is the warranty on the repair and on the parts?

A quote that grows after the pipe is already open.
!
No license number, no insurance, or a request for cash only.
!
A push to replace an entire system before the leak is even located.

Plumbing cost FAQ

How much does plumbing cost?

Small plumbing repairs cost $125 to $350, with $280 typical for a toilet, faucet or sink fix. Burst pipe repairs run $400 to $2,000, slab leaks $500 to $3,500 and a new toilet $350 to $800 installed. Plumbers charge $45 to $150 per hour or a flat $200 to $250.

Plumbers charge $45 to $150 per hour, averaging about $75 before trip fees and materials. Master plumbers bill $100 to $200 per hour. Many add a $50 to $200 service call fee that covers the first hour, so a small job costs more than the hourly rate alone.

Burst pipe repair costs $400 to $2,000, depending on where the pipe runs and how much wall or ceiling has to open. Freeze damage is the most common cause. Patching and cleanup may be separate line items, so ask before the work starts.

Pipe lining under a slab costs $500 to $3,500. Digging into the foundation and replacing pipe runs $700 to $5,000, rerouting plumbing $3,900 to $7,500, and replacing the slab $5,400 to $10,800. An inspection to find the leak costs $300 to $750.

Toilet installation costs $250 to $750 in labor, and $350 to $800 total with a standard two-piece unit. Two-piece toilets cost $100 to $500 for the fixture, one-piece $200 to $900. One-piece and smart models cost more because they are heavier and take longer to set.

A single leak is almost always cheaper to repair. A slab leak at $500 to $3,500 can be cheaper than a repipe, but repeated failures in galvanized or polybutylene pipe point to replacement. New plumbing pipes run $2,280 to $5,120 for a whole house.

Permits are needed when walls open, new pipe is run or fixtures are added, and they cost $30 to $500. Regular repairs and same-size replacements usually do not need one. Ask the plumber who pulls it and who meets the inspector.

Emergency plumbing bills at $125 to $170 per hour, roughly double or triple the weekday rate. Weekend, holiday and overnight calls carry the premium. Waiting for a weekday appointment is the easiest way to cut a small repair bill.

The $50 to $200 service call fee covers the trip and the first hour of diagnosis. Some plumbers charge $1 to $2 per mile after the first 10 miles, or a flat $200 to $250 for the first hour. The fee is separate from parts and labor on larger jobs.
