Permits and citiesPermits are set by city and county. A licence does not replace a permit, and a permit does not prove a licence.

General information, not legal advice. Confirm with the official board before you sign a contract. Thresholds count labour and materials together unless the state says otherwise.

Contractor license FAQ

Do I need a licensed contractor for a small job?

It depends on the state. Arizona requires a license at $1,000 or more, Florida exempts most jobs under $2,500, and Texas has no state license for general work at all.

In many states a handyman can do small jobs without a license, but electrical, plumbing and HVAC work usually needs a licensed trade contractor.

Search the license number on your state licensing board website. Check the name, status and expiry date.

No. Some cities, like Austin, register contractors without a state license. Registration shows the business is on file, not that it passed an exam.

Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona, Florida, North Carolina and Tennessee. More states are added after every rule is checked.
