How the math works

Epoxy
Baseline
$3 to $8 per sq ft
Two-part epoxy with flakes, good for most garages.
Polyaspartic
Upgrade
$4 to $11 per sq ft
Faster cure, better UV stability, can go over epoxy.
Metallic epoxy
Premium

Decorative, needs a skilled installer for the look.
Prep
Cost
10 to 30% of the price
Grinding, patching and moisture testing are where cheap quotes skip.

How to use the garage floor coating cost

Measure the floor, choose the coating, then compare bids on prep and topcoat.

1
Measure the floor
Length times width, excluding steps and ledges.
2
Pick the coating
Epoxy for value, polyaspartic for faster cure and UV stability, metallic for looks.
3
Confirm the prep
Diamond grinding and crack repair should be explicit in the quote.
4
Ask about moisture
A moisture test before coating prevents bubbling and peeling.

Mistakes that cost homeowners money

!
Laying epoxy over a floor that was only acid-etched, not ground.
!
Coating a floor with no vapour barrier and active moisture.
!
Skipping crack repair, which telegraphs through the coating.
!
Choosing metallic epoxy from the lowest bid, which is the hardest finish to install.

Garage floor coating cost FAQ

How much does garage floor epoxy cost?

Two-part epoxy installed runs $3 to $8 per sq ft, so a 400 sq ft two-car garage costs about $2,000. Polyaspartic runs $4 to $11 and metallic epoxy $7 to $20.

Ten to 20 years with proper prep and a topcoat. Failure usually comes from moisture, poor grinding or no primer, not from the coating brand.

Polyaspartic cures faster, resists UV yellowing and can be applied in cold weather. Epoxy is cheaper and still the standard for most residential garages.

Foot traffic after 12 to 24 hours and vehicles after three to seven days for epoxy. Polyaspartic allows vehicles in about 24 hours.

Only if the old coating is sound and has been abraded. Peeling or delaminating areas must be removed and patched first.

A clear topcoat adds UV and chemical resistance and is what keeps flakes from wearing. It usually adds $1 to $2 per sq ft.
