Quote red flags to watch for

!
No base depth in writingIf the quote doesn't say how much gravel goes down, you can't hold the contractor to it.
!
"Mesh" with no chairsWire mesh left lying on the dirt does nothing. Ask how it will be lifted into the slab.
!
No permit mentionedUnpermitted curb cuts can mean fines or tear-out. Ask who pulls the permit.
!
Large deposit up frontSome states cap home-improvement deposits. Check your state guide before paying.
!
Way below the low endUsually a thinner slab, less base or no reinforcement. Compare line by line.
!
No control joints or drainage planAsk where joints go and which way water will drain. It should slope away from the house.

Driveway and patio cost FAQ

How much does a concrete driveway cost?

Plain concrete usually runs about $6–$12 per sq ft installed. A standard 2-car driveway (20 × 40 ft, 800 sq ft) lands around $4,800–$9,600, plus removal of any old surface.

Up front, yes: asphalt is often $4–$8 per sq ft. It needs sealcoating every 2–3 years and lasts 15–20 years, versus 25–30 for concrete, so the long-run gap is smaller.

Pavers cost the most but can be lifted and relaid, and single damaged pieces can be swapped. They add curb appeal and handle soil movement better than a slab.

4 in for passenger cars, 5–6 in for trucks, RVs or soft soil. Each extra inch adds roughly 25% more concrete and about 6–8% to the total price.

Yes. Breaking out and hauling old concrete commonly adds $3–$6 per sq ft; asphalt is less. Ask whether it's in the quote.

Many cities require one, especially for a new curb cut or work in the right-of-way. Fees vary widely; check your city's building or public works department.

Usually 20–24 ft wide. Length depends on the setback; 40 ft is a common estimate. That's 800–960 sq ft.

Type the contractor's numbers into the breakdown above. A quote far below the low end often means a thinner base, no rebar or no permit.

How this calculator works

The estimator multiplies driveway area by an installed rate per square foot, then adds the finish, removal and permit lines. Rates move with thickness, finish, base condition and access. The result is a range, not a quote: national benchmarks checked October 2026.

A worked example

A 20 by 20 ft driveway is 400 sq ft. At $6 to $15 per sq ft installed, that is $2,400 to $6,000, typical about $3,600 for plain concrete. Removing an old driveway adds $1,500 to $2,500, and decorative finishes move the price toward the top of the range.

Questions

How much does a 400 sq ft driveway cost?

About $2,400 to $6,000 installed, typical $3,600 at the national range.

Does the estimate include removal?
