How the math works

Volume
Geometry
length × width × (depth ÷ 12)
Depth must be in feet, not inches.
Cubic yards
Supplier unit
cubic feet ÷ 27
Bulk topsoil is sold by the cubic yard.
Bags
Retail unit
cubic feet ÷ 0.75, rounded up
A 40 lb bag is about 0.75 cubic feet.
Weight

cubic yards × 1.15 tons
A cubic yard of soil is heavy; a pickup holds about 2 yards safely.

How to use the topsoil calculator

Measure the area, choose the depth for the use, then order slightly over.

1
Measure the area
Break odd shapes into rectangles and add them up.
2
Choose the depth
1 to 2 in for topdressing a lawn, 4 in for beds, 6 to 12 in for raised beds.
3
Order bulk or bags
Bulk past 2 cubic yards, bags for small beds or gentle topdressing.
4
Plan the drop
A cubic yard of soil weighs over a ton, so keep the delivery spot close to the work.

Mistakes that waste soil

!
Ordering for the finished depth without allowing for settling.
!
Spreading topsoil over existing weeds without killing them first.
!
Using heavy subsoil instead of screened topsoil in beds.
!
Forgetting that the truck may not fit a narrow driveway.

Topsoil calculator FAQ

How many cubic yards of topsoil do I need?

Length times width times depth in feet, divided by 27. A 20 × 15 ft bed at 4 inches needs about 3.7 cubic yards, or roughly 130 forty-pound bags.

Screened topsoil weighs about 1.15 tons per cubic yard; wet or clay-heavy soil is heavier. That matters for trailer and pickup limits.

Bulk screened topsoil runs about $28 to $65 per cubic yard delivered, depending on distance and screen quality. Bagged soil costs much more per yard.

Six inches of topsoil for a new lawn from seed, and 1 to 2 inches for topdressing an existing lawn. Deeper fill needs compaction and settling time.

Four to six inches for vegetables and annuals, and 8 to 12 inches for raised beds. Choose screened topsoil with organic matter, not subsoil.

Topsoil gives volume and drainage; compost gives nutrients and organic matter. A blend is best for beds, and compost alone is right for topdressing a lawn.
