How the math works

Tiles needed
Geometry
area × 144 × (1 + waste) ÷ tile area
Convert square feet to square inches before dividing by tile size.
Boxes
Packaging
tiles ÷ tiles per box, rounded up
Box counts vary by manufacturer, so always round up at the store.
Grout
Joint volume
area × (length + width) × joint ÷ tile area
Wider joints and small tiles use far more grout.
Thinset
Coverage
≈ 1 bag (50 lb) per 50 to 60 sq ft
Large format tile needs a thicker trowel and more thinset.

How to use the tile & grout calculator

Measure the room, pick the tile size, then add waste before you order.

1
Measure the area
Length times width for floors; height times length for walls.
2
Pick the tile size
Large tiles cover faster but need flatter floors and more cuts at edges.
3
Add waste
10 percent for straight layouts, 15 for diagonal or rooms with many corners.
4
Order grout and thinset
Grout weight depends on tile size and joint width, not just area.

Mistakes that waste tile

!
Ordering exactly the area with no waste, then running short on the last row.
!
Measuring in inches and forgetting to convert to feet.
!
Choosing large format tile over an uneven floor without levelling.
!
Mixing too much thinset at once, then throwing away the set batch.

Tile & grout calculator FAQ

How many tiles do I need for a 10 × 10 ft room?

Including 10 percent waste, a 10 × 10 ft floor needs about 117 square feet of tile: 12 × 12 in tiles work out to 117 tiles, or about 12 boxes at 10 tiles per box.

Grout depends on tile size and joint width. A 120 sq ft floor with 12 × 12 tile and 1/8 in joints needs roughly 6 to 8 lb of grout per coat.

About 1 bag of 50 lb thinset covers 50 to 60 sq ft with a 1/4 in trowel. Large format tile with a 1/2 in trowel covers closer to 40 sq ft per bag.

Ten percent for a straight layout in a simple room, and 15 percent for diagonal patterns, small tiles or rooms with many cuts.

LVP often costs less installed, around $4 to $9 per sq ft against $8 to $20 for tile. Tile lasts longer and is easier to clean but takes more labour.
