How the math works

Sod rolls
Coverage
lawn sq ft ÷ 10 sq ft per roll
Most US sod rolls cover 10 sq ft; pallets hold about 450 sq ft.
Seed rate
Seeding
lawn sq ft ÷ 1,000 × seed rate
Tall fescue needs about 6 lb per 1,000 sq ft; Bermuda about 3 lb.
Starter fertiliser
Application
≈ 2 lb per 1,000 sq ft
Apply at installation, not before, so the roots get it.
Water
Establishment
1 in per week for sod, twice daily for seed
Watering is the biggest hidden cost and the main failure point.

How to use the sod & seed calculator

Measure the lawn, decide sod or seed, then order materials and plan water.

1
Measure the lawn
Break the yard into rectangles and subtract beds, drives and buildings.
2
Choose sod or seed
Sod for instant coverage and slopes; seed for budget and larger areas.
3
Pick the grass
Match the grass to your climate zone and sun exposure, not to photos.
4
Plan the water
Sod needs daily water for two weeks; seed needs twice daily until germination.

Mistakes that kill a new lawn

!
Laying sod on dry, unprepared soil without loosening the top few inches.
!
Skipping starter fertiliser, then wondering why roots stay shallow.
!
Watering lightly and often instead of deeply and less often once established.
!
Seeding into summer heat without shade or a mulch cover.

Sod & seed calculator FAQ

How much sod do I need for 1,000 sq ft?

One hundred rolls, since standard US sod rolls cover about 10 square feet. That is roughly three pallets, and order 5 percent extra for edges and cuts.

Sod runs about $0.35 to $1.30 per square foot for the material depending on grass type, so 1,000 sq ft costs $350 to $1,300 before delivery and installation.

Tall fescue needs about 6 lb per 1,000 sq ft, Kentucky bluegrass 4 lb, Bermuda 3 lb and Zoysia 4 lb. Multiply by your lawn area in thousands of square feet.

Seed costs far less per square foot, but takes weeks longer and needs more water. Sod is worth the premium on slopes and where erosion is a risk.

Sod knits into the soil in two to three weeks with daily watering. Seed germinates in seven to 21 days and needs six to eight weeks before normal traffic.

Early autumn is ideal in most of the US, with spring second. Avoid midsummer heat and frozen ground, when watering and rooting both fail.
