Model, not a quote: heat pump savings depend on climate, fuel price and insulation. Electric resistance heat is COP 1, gas about 0.9, oil and propane about 0.85. Cold climates need cold-climate equipment and may keep a backup heat source.
Savings depend on your climate, your current fuel price and how well the house is insulated. Get a Manual J before sizing.

How the math works

COP
Efficiency
COP 3 means 3 units of heat per unit of electricity
Electric resistance is COP 1, so a heat pump is roughly three times as efficient.
New heating cost
Estimate
current cost × (old efficiency ÷ COP)
A rough comparison, not a utility bill projection.
Annual savings
Estimate
current cost − new cost
Cold snaps reduce the COP and the savings.
Payback
Cost
installed cost ÷ annual savings
Most US homes see payback in 6 to 12 years.

How to use the heat pump savings

Model the current bill, choose the fuel and efficiency, then check the payback against quotes.

1
Find the current bill
Add the heating months from your utility or fuel supplier.
2
Confirm the system
Electric resistance, gas, oil and propane each have different delivered costs.
3
Check the COP
Cold-climate heat pumps hold efficiency lower; ask for the model's data.
4
Get a load calculation
Sizing by square footage alone leads to short-cycling and poor savings.

Mistakes that cost homeowners money

!
Comparing a heat pump with electric resistance and expecting the same savings from gas.
!
Oversizing the system, which short-cycles and wastes the efficiency advantage.
!
Ignoring insulation and air sealing, which cuts savings by half.
!
Forgetting the electrical panel and duct work costs in the payback.

Heat pump savings FAQ

How much can a heat pump save?

Replacing electric resistance heat typically saves 50 to 65 percent on heating, roughly $1,200 a year on an $1,800 bill. Gas and oil savings are smaller and depend on local prices.

Cold-climate heat pumps operate well below freezing, with a reduced output and COP. Below about 5 F they usually need a backup source.

Typically six to twelve years depending on fuel prices, climate and whether duct work is needed. Replacing electric resistance heat has the shortest payback.

Usually not for a ducted system if the existing ducts are sized and sealed properly. Ductless mini-splits need no ducts at all.

Federal and utility programs change frequently. Ask your utility and check the ENERGY STAR rebate finder, and keep the invoice and model number.

In mild climates yes. In very cold climates, gas can still be cheaper to run, though a dual-fuel setup can use each where it performs best.

Using the calculator defaults, $1,200 electric heat gives Annual savings: $800 and Savings over 10 years: $8,000, with a typical range $520 to $1,000. Change the waste allowance, material or thickness to match your site.

Using the calculator defaults, cold climate, $2,400 gives Annual savings: $1,300 and Savings over 10 years: $13,000, with a typical range $845 to $1,625. Change the waste allowance, material or thickness to match your site.
