How the math works

Area to coat
Geometry
length × height × sides
A 6 ft fence has 6 sq ft of face per linear foot, per side.
Coverage per gallon
Product
200 to 300 sq ft per coat
Rough sawn wood covers less than smooth planed boards.
Gallons
Purchase
area ÷ coverage, rounded up
Two coats are normal for a first stain job.
Sealer vs stain
Choice
sealer covers more, protects less from UV
Solid stain hides grain and lasts longest.

How to use the fence stain calculator

Measure the fence, choose the product and sides, then buy enough for two coats.

1
Measure the fence
Length times height, times the sides you plan to coat.
2
Check the wood
New pressure-treated wood needs weeks to dry before staining.
3
Choose the product
Semi-transparent shows grain, solid hides it and lasts longer, sealer just protects.
4
Plan two coats
The first coat on weathered wood soaks in; the second builds the finish.

Mistakes that cost homeowners money

!
Staining new pressure-treated wood before it dries, which traps moisture.
!
Coating one side and leaving the other grey, which looks patchy from the neighbour's side.
!
Skipping the cleaning step, so the stain peels within a season.
!
Buying exactly one coat of coverage for a first-time stain.

Fence stain calculator FAQ

How much stain do I need for a fence?

About one gallon per 200 sq ft of fence face for semi-transparent stain. A 150 ft, 6 ft fence stained on both sides is 1,800 sq ft, so roughly 9 gallons per coat.

Materials run about $270 to $540 for a typical 150 ft fence at two coats, and professional staining runs $1.50 to $3.50 per sq ft including labour.

Four to six weeks for new pressure-treated lumber, or until it stops beading water. Staining wet wood traps moisture and causes peeling.

Every two to four years for semi-transparent stain, five to seven years for solid stain. Sealer needs reapplying every one to two years.

Stain penetrates and does not peel, which suits wood fences. Paint sits on the surface and peels in wet climates, but solid stain is a middle ground.

Spraying is faster but wastes product and needs back-brushing to work it into the grain. Brushing gives better coverage on rough sawn boards.
