How to use the panel upgrade cost

Find out the service size, decide panel-only or full service, then get three quotes.

1
Read the existing service
The main breaker amp rating and the meter tell you what you have now.
2
Decide the goal
More breaker space, a bigger service for an EV or heat pump, or a safety replacement.
3
Ask about the utility
A service upgrade needs a disconnect and reconnect scheduled with the utility.
4
Compare quotes on scope
Panel brand, breaker count, grounding and permit handling should all be listed.

Mistakes that cost homeowners money

!
Paying for a bigger service when the real problem is a crowded panel.
!
Not budgeting for the utility disconnect and reconnect fees.
!
Letting a contractor reuse an old grounding electrode.
!
Skipping the permit and inspection, which can fail at resale.

Panel upgrade cost FAQ

How much does an electrical panel upgrade cost?

A 200 A panel replacement typically costs about $3,000 nationally, with a range of $1,800 to $4,500. A 100 A swap runs $1,200 to $3,000 and a 400 A service runs $3,500 to $8,000.

A 100 A service handles most gas-heated homes without an EV or heat pump. Adding an EV charger, heat pump or electric range usually pushes the load calculation past 100 A.

Most panel swaps take four to eight hours plus a permit inspection. A full service upgrade takes a full day and depends on the utility schedule.

The homeowner does, either directly or through the electrician. Fees vary by utility and some require a week or more of notice.

It rarely adds appraised value directly, but it removes an inspection red flag and is often required for an EV charger or heat pump.

A subpanel adds breaker space without increasing capacity. It works when the service has capacity and the panel is simply full.

Using the calculator defaults, 100 a panel swap gives Typical total: $3,026 and Cost per breaker space: $74.00, with a typical range $2,064 to $4,553. Change the waste allowance, material or thickness to match your site.
