How the math works

Wall area
Geometry
2 × (length + width) × height
Four walls of a rectangular room, before openings.
Sheet count
Packaging
area ÷ sheet area × 1.10, rounded up
A 4 × 8 sheet covers 32 sq ft; 4 × 12 covers 48.
Joint compound
Coverage
≈ 1 lb per 20 sq ft at three coats
More for heavy texture or many small cuts.
Tape
Coverage
≈ 1 ft per 3 sq ft of board
Paper tape is cheaper; mesh tape is faster but weaker on corners.

How to use the drywall sheets calculator

Measure the room, subtract openings, then order sheets, mud and tape together.

1
Measure walls and ceiling
Wall area is the perimeter times height; add the ceiling if it is being covered.
2
Subtract openings
Doors and windows remove area, but plan for the off-cuts around them.
3
Choose the sheet size
Longer sheets mean fewer joints but need two people to hang.
4
Order mud and tape
Three coats per joint is standard; buy mud by the box for a full room.

Mistakes that cost homeowners money

!
Hanging sheets vertically when horizontal would reduce joints.
!
Butting sheets tight instead of leaving the tapered edge gap.
!
Skipping the vapour barrier in a basement or bathroom wall.
!
Buying lightweight mud for a first coat that needs strength.

Drywall sheets calculator FAQ

How many sheets of drywall do I need?

Divide the wall and ceiling area by the sheet size and add 10 percent. A 12 × 10 ft room with 8 ft ceilings needs about 20 sheets of 4 × 8 drywall including the ceiling.

A 4 × 8 ft sheet of half-inch drywall costs about $15 to $20 at a US home center, and 4 × 12 sheets run $22 to $30. Installed cost is $1.50 to $3.50 per sq ft.

About 1 lb per 20 sq ft of board for three coats, so a 500 sq ft room needs roughly 25 lb. Boxes are sold in 4.5 gallon sizes, about 55 lb.

Roughly 1 ft of tape per 3 sq ft of board. Buy 500 ft rolls for a full room and keep the remainder for repairs.

Half-inch is standard for walls and ceilings with joists 16 in on centre. Five-eighth is better for ceilings 24 in on centre, for fire rating and for sound insulation.

About 32 screws per 4 × 8 sheet on walls and slightly more on ceilings, spaced 12 in on centre. Use coarse thread into wood and fine thread into steel studs.
