How the math works

Concrete volume
Geometry
length × width × (thickness ÷ 12) ÷ 27
Cubic yards of ready-mix, before the waste allowance.
Waste allowance
Ordering
volume × (1 + waste %)
5% for a formed slab, 10% for footings on uneven ground.
Base gravel
Subbase
area × (base depth ÷ 12) ÷ 27 × 1.1
Compacted gravel settles about 10%, so order extra.

How to use the concrete slab cost

Measure the slab, set the thickness from its load, then check the base and finish.

1
Measure the slab
Length times width inside the forms, plus any aprons or steps.
2
Set the thickness
4 in for patios, 5 for driveways, 6 for RVs and heavy equipment.
3
Confirm the base
Four inches of compacted gravel over graded soil, thicker in clay.
4
Pick the finish
Broom finish is included; stamping, staining or exposing cost per sq ft.

Mistakes that cost homeowners money

!
Pouring on un-compacted soil, which cracks in the first season.
!
Skipping control joints, then paying for crack repair.
!
Ordering under 4 yards without budgeting the short-load fee.
!
Letting the crew reuse old mesh or skip chairs under the steel.

Concrete slab cost FAQ

How much does a concrete slab cost?

Plan on $6.50 to $10.50 per square foot installed for a plain slab, so a 400 sq ft slab at 4 inches runs about $2,600 to $4,200. Decorative and stamped finishes push the rate to $18 per square foot and up.

Length times width times thickness in feet, divided by 27. A 20 × 20 ft slab at 4 inches is about 4.9 cubic yards, and 5% waste brings it to 5.2.

Ready-mix above about 1 cubic yard. One yard equals roughly 45 bags of 80 lb mix, and bags cost about 60% more plus your mixing time.

$50 to $150, or about $53 per yard, when the order is under the supplier minimum of about 4 cubic yards. It is the most common surprise on small pours.

Five inches is the practical minimum for cars, and 6 inches for RVs, trucks or poor soil. Thickness matters more than strength class for residential work.

Most cities require a permit for flatwork over a small threshold or anything attached to a structure, typically $50 to $200 plus inspection.
