US insulation prices for October 2026: blown fiberglass $12–$26 per bag, about 520 sq ft-R of coverage per bag, and air sealing $0.40–$0.80 per sq ft. IECC 2021 recommends R-49 to R-60 for most attics.

How the math works

R-value to add
Code
target R − current R
IECC 2021 suggests R-49 to R-60 for most US attics.
Depth
Product
R-value ÷ 2.7 per inch
Blown fiberglass is about 2.5 to 2.8 per inch; cellulose about 3.5.
Bags
Coverage
area × R-value ÷ 520 per bag
Bag coverage is printed on the label per R-value.
Air sealing
First step
seal then insulate
Stopping air leaks often saves more than adding R-value.

How to use the attic insulation r-value calculator

Measure the attic, check the current R-value, then top up to the target depth.

1
Measure the attic
Square footage of the attic floor, not the roof.
2
Check the current R
Measure existing depth and multiply by the product's R per inch.
3
Air seal first
Seal top plates, penetrations and the attic hatch before insulating.
4
Keep soffit vents open
Use baffles so the new insulation does not block ventilation.

Mistakes that cost homeowners money

!
Adding insulation over air leaks and expecting the full saving.
!
Blocking soffit vents with insulation, which causes moisture problems.
!
Compressing insulation into a smaller depth and losing R-value.
!
Skipping the attic hatch, which is often the biggest leak.

Attic insulation R-value FAQ

What R-value should attic insulation be?

R-49 to R-60 for most US climates under IECC 2021, and R-38 in milder zones. A typical existing attic has R-11 to R-19, so a top-up is usually worthwhile.

Divide the area by the bag coverage for your target R-value. For blown fiberglass at about 520 sq ft-R per bag, a 1,200 sq ft attic going from R-11 to R-49 needs about 57 bags.

About 14 to 18 inches for R-49 with blown fiberglass. Depth is what delivers the R-value, so do not compress it.

The DOE estimates air sealing plus insulation can cut heating and cooling costs by around 10 to 20 percent. Air sealing usually carries the bigger share.

Home centers rent blowers and it is a realistic DIY job with two people. The attic must be air sealed first, and safety gear is essential.

Utility programs frequently offer rebates per square foot of insulation. Check your utility and keep the product labels and invoice.

Using the calculator defaults, 1,200 sq ft, r-11 to r-49 gives Bags of blown-in: 88 and Typical cost: $2,309, with a typical range $1,636 to $3,165. Change the waste allowance, material or thickness to match your site.
